Expert advice to help you maximize your storage space and protect your belongings.
Expert Advice
Use clear, detailed labels on all boxes and containers. Include the contents and the room they came from. This makes it much easier to find items later without having to open every box. Consider using color-coded labels for different categories or rooms.
Always place heavier boxes and items at the bottom of your stacks, with lighter items on top. This prevents crushing and makes your storage unit more stable and safer. It also makes it easier to access items without risking injury.
Don't pack your unit wall-to-wall. Leave narrow aisles so you can access items in the back without having to unload everything. Place frequently needed items near the front and seasonal or rarely used items toward the back.
Whenever possible, use boxes of similar sizes. This makes stacking much easier and more stable, maximizing your vertical space. Medium-sized boxes are ideal for most items—they're easier to carry and stack more efficiently than oversized boxes.
Cover furniture with blankets or furniture covers to protect against dust and scratches. Store mattresses flat or on their side, and use mattress bags to keep them clean. Disassemble large furniture pieces when possible to save space and prevent damage.
Maintain a detailed inventory of everything in your storage unit. Take photos of valuable items and keep the list in a safe place at home. This helps with insurance claims if needed and makes it easy to remember what you have stored without making a trip to the facility.
